Music Manuscript And Archival Cataloguer - British Library - St Pancras
Time Fixed Term Contract.
The British
Library is now seeking to appoint two archivists for a period of six months to
sort, arrange and describe recent music archives and manuscripts, in particular
the Boosey & Hawkes music archive.
Formed in
1930 from the merging of two companies each with an impressive pedigree, Boosey
& Hawkes built up a publishing catalogue that reads like a roll call of the
greatest composers of the 20 th century, including Stravinsky,
Bartók, Britten, Rachmaninov, Elgar, Copland and Strauss. It also published
much popular music, film music, ballads, and music for wind and brass bands.
All of this activity placed the company at the heart of music making in the UK,
as explained in Helen Wallace’s Boosey & Hawkes: the publishing story
(2007).
The Boosey
and Hawkes archive of its music publishing business was acquired by the British
Library in March this year. It covers the period ca. 1880 – 1980, and contains
production material relating to the company’s music publications (e.g. proofs
and associated correspondence with the composers), as well as other
documentation relating to its day-to-day business, such as correspondence,
financial records, minutes of meetings, contracts and documentation of other
legal matters.
Applicants
should be qualified archivists, with relevant experience of arranging and
cataloguing collections in an online cataloguing system to international
standards (ISAD(G), NCA Rules etc.). Knowledge of music and foreign languages
would be advantageous but not essential. They should be available to take up an
appointment at the beginning of October.
